 School Newsletter January 2017

Happy New Year to those of you who I have not managed to catch up with in the last week. The children have made a great start back, refreshed from their Christmas holidays. I hope that they have been talking enthusiastically about their new learning – they are certainly working hard when I carry out my regular climate walks.

By the end of this week you should receive the termly newsletter from your child’s class teacher which will outline the topic for this term and any special events that are due to happen. For example, I have just encountered 4F being drilled as Roman soldiers in the hall by Captain Fielden Maximus –clearly year 4 are studying the Romans this term!

I am sorry that some of the children in Key Stage 2 got overly muddy during PE last week – we will make sure in future that we check the whole of the field area before we allow PE to take place. As you may know the government recommends that children participate in two full hours of physical activity a week – not just two PE sessions. This is why we also encourage teachers to take children out for a daily walk/jog around the playground – children in Key Stage 1 always run/jog around the playground at the end of each playtime session.

This is all part of our drive to increase physical activity and promote a healthy lifestyle. Later in the year I hope to give your more information on how we are working towards a Healthy Schools accreditation.

I look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks’ time at the parent consultation evenings. The online booking system worked really well in October so we will continue with this – the log in letter will be sent out next week.

In the meantime if you have any concerns or queries please contact the teacher of your child in the first instance. Mrs Frost, our new Assistant Head for Key Stage 1 or Mrs Loader for Key Stage 2 (while Mrs Welch is on Maternity leave looking after her three month old son) are your next port of call. I am usually available for a quick chat at the year2/4 gate in the mornings and at the Nursery gate in the afternoons.

Here are a few key dates to look out for:-

19th January Winter Disco Years 1 / 2 / 3 – 4.30pm – 5.30pm

                                           Years 4 / 5 / 6 – 5.45pm – 6.45-pm

6th & 7th February Parent Consultations

13th -17th February Half - term

Finally in the event of severe weather I have been informed by the Samuel Ward Academy Trust that any closure is the decision of individual Headteachers based on the safety of staff getting to work and being able to educate our pupils on site. Any decision to close the school due to bad weather will not be taken lightly. Please consult the school website for any likely closure this will also be parent-mailed.
